CHAPTER 15

Angel

Carlos treats me like a Faberge egg. I am after all, precious cargo and Dell has amused that he should handle me with care, but it’s the way he’s always treated me anyway. Big brother energy, overly protective, loyal without question.

With me, he relaxes a little, blasts old school Snoop and a little N.W.A. as he speeds down Santa Monica. He’s more than just her driver. He’s her security, runs errands for her, things Sherry doesn’t have time to do. He’s her connection to the underground and knows people, who know people.

We have something in common. Our shared heritage. My father is half black, half Mexican, but to Los, I may as well be full blooded Mexicana. My dad can’t speak a lick of Spanish, so neither do we as he kids. He didn’t know much about his Mexican heritage as he was raised by his black mother who didn’t keep close ties to the man that knocked her up, who by the way, had a whole wife and family back at home in Mexico.

And he talks about his kids like they’re the greatest thing ever and I love that. This is just who he is and I understand why Dell has kept him around after all these years. Perhaps if I were married to a man like him, I’d still be married.

When I married Kess, I didn’t really know him. I’m sure more time dating would’ve solved that. I liked him enough. I had no reference to what love really was at the time, so when he asked me to marry him, I said, yes, never really vetting out the consequences of such a major decision. I literally just went with the flow, let life and this man carry me along the way before I realized I was half way to drowning.

I wrote off men after that. I keep that to myself because Dell is particularly sensitive to women who discover women after heart break from a man.

Carlos pulls off the Freeway, and I have him make a detour before heading to Dell’s HSH event in Downtown.

He pulls up to a corner market so I can get a six pack and a box of cigarettes and as usual he goes inside on my behalf because I’m dressed to the nines in a
